Important! And NOT an April Fool’s Joke!
Tomorrow is a very special day, especially for people like me: Autism Awareness Day! And yes, I am in the autism spectrum. So I have a favor to ask you: if you have not already planned your outfit for tomorrow, please plan to WEAR BLUE! The symbolic color of autism. I myself will do the same.
I don’t know if you ever noticed this, but the prevalence of autism in the United States, especially for children, has literally skyrocketed over the past half century. That rate rose from a reported
- 1 in 5,000 in 1975 to
- 1 in 2,500 in 1985 to
- 1 in 500 in 1995 to
- 1 in 250 in 2001 to
- 1 in 166 in 2004 to
- 1 in 150 in 2006 to
- 1 in 125 in 2008 to
- 1 in 110 in 2010 to
- 1 in 88 in 2012 to
- 1 in 68 in 2014 to
- 1 in 59 in 2018.
Today, that rate is yet even higher. Last week Autism Speaks announced, on Instagram and Facebook, that the Centers for Disease Control released their biennial–which means every other year–update of the prevalence of autism in children in America: 1 in 54!
Even though I posted it on April 1, remember that none of this is an April Fool’s joke!
